Flexible claw coupling
The flexible claw coupling – also known as a torsionally flexible coupling, elastomer coupling, cam coupling or shaft balancer coupling – consists of two coupling halves (hubs) and an elastomer ring gear. In addition, there are concave claws (cast cams) on the end faces of the hubs, which engage with each other. The elastic spider fills the remaining gaps and gives the Coupling its damping properties.
Accordingly, the elastomer coupling is the key to the smooth and long-term operation of your machine or system. Although the design of the flexible claw coupling may sound simple, the flexible claw coupling is highly effective and versatile.
In this article, we present three main functions and various product features of flexible claw couplings. Finally, we will name a few flexible claw couplings from proven manufacturers.
Flexible claw couplings: three main functions
In the following, we assign three functional areas to the flexible claw couplings.
Performance function
Claw couplings represent a possible connection between two shaft ends (drive and output). The aim is to transmit rotation or torque. Claw couplings transmit the torque positively.
Equalizing function
Elastic claw couplings dampen vibrations and compensate for shaft misalignment (radial, axial and angular). For this reason, flexible claw couplings consist of two hubs that are connected with an elastic element (elastomer spider). The elastomer spider is also available in different elasticities.
Safety function
To protect the entire system from damage, the claw coupling separates the output from the drive at a defined torque limit. Flexible claw couplings therefore represent a predetermined breaking point in terms of safety.

Damping
Unevenly operating power machines produce shocks and vibrations. On the one hand, these must be “cushioned” and, on the other, a torsional vibration-damping power transmission must be created. For this reason, an oil-resistant elastomer spider that is insensitive to temperature is used. This is able to absorb shaft misalignments in angular, radial and axial directions.
The elastomer is also characterized by different Shore hardnesses. The latter in turn determine the load capacity of the intermediate rings and allow indirect conclusions to be drawn about the transmittable torque. The Shore hardnesses can be recognized by their different colouring.
Easy to install and low maintenance
The assembly of flexible claw couplings is considerably simplified because flexible claw couplings are pluggable. Elastomer couplings are also considered to be particularly low-maintenance, as the elastic elements are very durable. Nevertheless, the elastomer is subject to an ageing process, which is why you need to check the Coupling regularly for wear.
The ageing process is influenced by different environmental conditions. These include the storage or operating location, the duration of use and the humidity. You should therefore set maintenance intervals according to the ambient conditions.
Flexible
Furthermore, torsionally flexible claw couplings act as flexible connections in almost all areas of general mechanical and plant engineering. This includes, for example, their use in hydraulic drives.
