Care of rubber couplings

The care of rubber couplings – we tell you what you need to consider.

Rubber elements are used both for power transmission and for damping vibrations. Rubber elements also compensate for radial misalignments, angular misalignments and axial misalignments (depending on the Coupling).

In addition to choosing the right rubber element, you should pay attention to the regular care and maintenance of the elements.

RUBBER ELEMENTS IN FOCUS- MAINTENANCE OF RUBBER COUPLINGS

Prevent damage

Prevent damage to your rubber coupling. To do this, we first advise you to ensure that you have the right rubber element for your Coupling. suitable rubber element to your coupling. The rubber element and rubber hardness must always be compatible with your machine. If they are compatible, you must adhere to basic rules to ensure that the rubber element installed in the Coupling can provide good service for as long as possible. rubber elements are particularly sensitive to the effects of heat, oil, salt and sunlight. A dry and dark environment, on the other hand, is very suitable for rubber elements. Avoid additional factors such as covers and housings, which can lead to heat build-up. However, always protect the rubber element from direct sunlight and penetrating liquids. It is best to choose a dry and dark a dry and dark location. These measures can slow down the ageing process, which is accompanied by progressive hardening and embrittlement of the rubber element.

You already know that rubber elements should and can compensate for misalignments and dampen vibrations. In the event of a disproportionate adjustment of the Coupling the rubber element is also affected. To extend the service life of the rubber element, you should therefore always keep an eye on the shaft alignment. This also has a decisive advantage in terms of your energy costs. Increased vibrations and oscillations cause your energy consumption to skyrocket. If the rubber element is permanently defective, production losses due to long downtimes cannot be avoided.

Recognize damage

Do you have the feeling that your rubber element is damaged or worn? This can happen despite preventive measures. After all, the rubber element is a wearing part. You should replace it or have it replaced routinely after many hours of operation or at least have it checked or inspected. Rubber elements may be stored for a maximum of seven years without being fitted. Therefore, always check the date of manufacture before fitting.

You can recognize a broken rubber element by the rubber hardness. To do this, determine the hardness of the element using a Shore tester. Does the “actual” deviate from the “target”? Then the rubber element should be replaced. the color of the surface. Discoloration of the surface is caused by the decomposition of rubber. The surface turns brownish and takes on a characteristic bitter odor.

Repair damage

Changing a rubber element is absolutely necessary after a certain period of time, despite preventive measures. This is because even a well-adjusted machine is subject to wear.

Couplings can be repaired to varying degrees depending on the model. Your own service team can often carry out the repairs. We carry out repairs for the CENTAFLEX- DS, CENTASTART and CENTAX-V.
